It is scheduled each year at Aintree over a distance of about 2 miles and 1 furlong (2 miles and 209 yards, or 3,410 meters), and it takes place during the Grand National meeting in early April. The event began in 1987 and was upgraded to Grade 2 level in 1995. From 2005 through 2013, it was sponsored by John Smith’s, and since 2014, by Weatherbys Racing Bank. Some horses in the field have previously competed in the Champion Bumper.
