The County Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 National Hunt hurdle competition in the United Kingdom available to horses aged five and up. It is run on Cheltenham’s New Course over a distance of around 2 miles and 1 furlong (2 miles and 179 yards, or 3,382 meters), with eight hurdles to be jumped. It is a handicap race that takes place every year during the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Trespasser, ridden by George Duller, was the first winner of the County Hurdle in 1920. Between 1995 and 2016, it was known as the Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle, named after Vincent O’Brien, an Irish racehorse trainer who retired in 1994. During his career, O’Brien won twenty-three races at the Cheltenham Festival.
For many years, the County Hurdle was the last event held at the Festival. However, before to the 2009 meeting, a new running order was revealed, and it is now the second race on the final day.
