Betway Bowl 2023 | Grand National Festival

The race was first held in 1984 as a consolation prize for horses who had been beaten or were unable to compete in the previous month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup. The initial race was sponsored by Perrier-Jout and was dubbed the Perrier-Jout Champagne Cup. Whitbread sponsored it for the next three years, and it was known as the Whitbread Gold Label Cup.

Martell (the Martell Cup, the Martell Cognac Cup) and Betfair have been subsequent sponsors (the Betfair Bowl). Totesport began sponsoring the game as the Totesport Bowl in 2008, and Betfred took over the sponsorship in 2012 after purchasing The Tote in 2011. From the 2017 race, Betway took over sponsorship.

In 2010, the race was elevated to Grade 1 classification. It presently takes place on the first day of the three-day Grand National Festival.

The Betway Bowl is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase held in the United Kingdom for horses aged five and up. It is run over a distance of approximately 3 miles and 1 furlong (3 miles and 210 yards, or 5,020 meters) at Aintree, with nineteen obstacles to be jumped. Every year in early April, the race is scheduled to take place.
